Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Since 1949
What is your primary product or service?
We are a school and boat rental operation that offers practical courses in Safe Powerboat Handling and Sailing. These are not theoretical classroom courses like the Coast Guard Auxiliary offers. This is practical training in safety and boat handling aboard our boats. We are also a Club and boat rental operation.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
In the 1970's I was teaching sailing and have been interested ever since. I have cruised and raced sailing vessels over 47,000 miles. I qualified for the US Olympic Team in 1980. I have owned 47 boats and yachts personally and in my charter fleets.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We have brand new Twin Vee power catamarans in our fleet. These are perfect for the waters around Miami which tend to be "choppy" and uncomfortable in most powerboats. But our power catamarans slice through the waves and give you the smoothest ride possible. We also have late model sailboats to rent and learn on.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
One location in Coral Gables and hoping to expand to Miami Beach
Provide detailed directions to your location
Take Old Cutler Road south from Coconut Grove or Miami to Matheson Park. Turn east and we are in the Matheson Marina by the fuel dock. See the signs that say "Boating School" or "Boat Rentals"
What type of payments do you accept?
Credit cards
Which areas do you service?
Biscayne Bay and Miami
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Gary Fretz
What are your hours of operation?
9-5 seven days a week (weather permitting)
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
You did better than expected!
